Exposition « Le Spectre des jardins », Ars & Locus Institut, Fondation Coubertin, Saint-Rémy-les-Chevreuse, 2006

Ars & Locus Institut was created at EHESS (University of High Research in Sociology, Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales) in Paris. The idea was originally put toward at an international conference organised by AICA (International Association of Art Critics, Association Internationale des Critiques d’Art) in 1995, on the subject EAST/WEST: Forms of art and landscape design accomplished by Jacques Leenhardt at the Crestet Art Center, between 1987 and 2001. The ambition of Ars & Locus Institute is to pursue the experimentation, on both a conceptual and a practical level.

The exhibition ‘The Spectrum of gardens’ is the second artistic project organised by Ars & Locus Institut. It follows on from ‘Space : Tension and Structure, a Korean garden in Marney-sur-Seine, organised by CAMAC (Centre d’Art Marney Art Center) in 2004, in which a number of European artists also participated and where the art of Korean gardens was analysed through the forms of contemporary art. The same theme recurs in a similar context but in more developed and varied forms with the title of ‘The Spectrum of gardens ». On this occasion, the garden as an art form is shown to involve a process of movement and discovery. Transformed in a contemporary work of art, the garden is both visible and invisible.

Ars & Locus Institut a été créé à l’Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), Paris, dans la continuité des débats menés en 1995 dans le cadre du Congrès international de l’AICA (Association internationale des critiques d’art) sur Les Formes de l’art : Orient/Occident, notamment dans le domaine de l’art du paysage. L’Institut s’appuie dans ses réflexions sur l’expérience accumulée de 1987 à 2001 au Crestet center d’art, sous la présidence de Jacques Leenhardt, dans le domaine de l’articulation entre pratiques artistiques et paysagères. Il se propose de poursuivre ces travaux tant sur le plan conceptuel que par l’organisation de manifestations.

L’exposition Le Spectre des jardins est la deuxième manifestation artistique de Ars & Locus Institut. Elle fait suite à Espace : tension et structure, un jarrdin coréen à Marnay-sur-Seine. Dans cette première exposition organisée au CAMAC (Centre d’Art Marnay Art Center) en 2004, à laquelle participaient également plusieurs artistes européens, l’art du jardin coréen était analysé à travers la forme de l’art contemporain. Cette problématique est reprise dans un contexte comparable pour l’exposition Le Spectre des jardins à la  Fondation Coubertin, dans une dimension plus évoluée et plus variée. L’art du jardin se dévoile cette fois en tant que jeu de parcours. Le jardin est simultanément visible et invisible, par sa transformation en oeuvre d’art contemporaine. Cette exposition doit beaucoup à l’intérêt des artistes pour une nouvelle pratique de l’art du jardin. Grâce à leur participation, le jardin révèle tout un spectre de possibilités poétiques ; il se constitue en une nouvelle forme d’art du parcours. Comme tout art, le jardin se renouvelle à chaque époque.
